Turkeys saved after lorry crash to still face a horrible fate during christmas eve

Nearly 300 turkeys survived when the lorry carrying them crashed.
But it was a short reprieve - as they were loaded on to another truck and taken on to a Bernard Matthews factory to be readied for the Christmas table .
The lorry toppled on to its side at a roundabout in Norwich.
Some of the birds escaped from their pens as the toppled truck was righted, and more got out when pallets being loaded on to a forklift truck crashed to the floor.
Stephen Bale, animal welfare officer at Bernard Matthews , said the majority of the birds, which he described as ‘robust creatures’, survived the crash.

He said: "Because they are adults they are fairly calm. They were panting when the lorry was enclosed, but the fire service gave us a fan to blow cool air through.”
The RSPCA was also called to the scene.
Traffic was held up for nearly four hours following the incident and the driver, in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment.
