Fans get a taste of X-Men: Apocalypse as new trailer drops

Why so blue? ... Jennifer Lawrence shapeshifts into full Mystique mode in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Picture: Supplied
They’ve triumphed over a litany of hazards — from evil mutants to mutant-hunting robots, but as the first trailer for next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse suggests perhaps a threat from within will succeed where all others have failed and undo Charles Xavier’s dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans once and for all.

Of course, it wouldn’t be X-Men without one of the characters having an absolute identity crisis. This time around, however, it’s not Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique who’s walking the line between good and evil, but Michael Fassbender’s Magneto who falls under the thrall of the mysterious Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).

Indeed, it looks as if conflict between the mutants is not in short supply. While Mystique’s allegiance with Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) might surprise longtime fans, they’ll be shocked as Alexandra Shipp’s Storm is seen standing alongside the bad guys this time around, with Ben Hardy’s Archangel also on the wrong side of the conflict. (No wonder James McAvoy’s Charles has finally got around to adopting the iconic bald look.)
Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse also stars Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne and Evan Peters, with Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Lana Condor and Kodi Smit-McPhee joining the cast as new (-ish) mutants Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee and Nightcrawler. The movie will be released in May, 2016.
